Under the direction of the Applications Advisory Committee (APAC), the Identity Management Working Group (IMWG) seeks to create a forum for inter-institutional discussion of identity management issues.

The group encourages the collaboration and exchange of ideas and information between BCNET member institutions, provincial post-secondary educational institutions and provincial and federal public sectors, including government and health care authorities.

To learn more about the roles and functions of the working group, view the IMWG Terms of Reference.

Current IMWG Initiatives (August 2007)

Joining forces with the BC government’s identity management initiative, the BCNET Identity Management Working Group has been attending government meetings and workshops to represent the higher education community and ensure the authorized access to electronic data across government ministries and the public sector.

The Full Implementation of eduroam

In 2006, the Identity Management Working Group led a proof-of-concept for eduroam (security technology that allows for inter-institutional roaming) within BC. Today, the IMWG is ramping up to fully implement the eduroam project, which will initiate wireless reciprocity amongst all BCNET research and higher education institution members.

Each member site will configure their existing wireless network and RADIUS infrastructure to implement eduroam. Once implemented, eduroam will enable faculty and staff to travel to foreign campuses and have wireless access using their home credentials.
