Members are defined as universities and post-secondary institutes that have a research mandate within the province of British Columbia. Publicly-funded universities are automatically granted membership. Post-secondary institutions and research organizations may be granted membership if approved by two thirds of the voting delegates.
Governance and Voting
BCNET's governance structure allows for weighted voting and varying classes of membership for research and higher education. Today, the structure is scalable and flexible and allows new members to join BCNET without changes to by-laws. This governance model demonstrates a more equal representation to the entire publicly- funded research and education sector within British Columbia.
There are four classes of membership, which are assigned voting delegates at general meetings as follows:
Founding members: each founding member has 2 delegates.
Core members: each core member has 1 delegate.
Higher education members: higher education members choose one delegate to represent the class.
Research organization members: research organizations choose one delegate to represent the class.
Members must be dedicated to the mission and vision of BCNET and contribute towards the operating and capital costs of the BCNET society. Members govern BCNET and its activities.
