BCNET Transit Service Usage Increases Across the Province

At any given time across the province of BC, students, researchers, professors, university staff, hospitals and administrators are connecting to the Internet through BCNET's Transit Exchange networks. The amount of Internet transit service utilized at any point in time is of great interest to BCNET as it shows the current utilization of the Internet transit service, as well as the trend over the years and into the future.
Over the past summer, BCNET's utilization stats indicate that the aggregate Internet transit service usage across BCNET's five Transit Exchanges has increased by 100 megabits per second. In early spring of this year, the aggregate transit service utilization across all Transit Exchanges was 900 megabits per second. Today the aggregate transit service usage has increased to a sustained 1.0 gigabits per second, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
This increase in Internet transit service usage indicates a significant expansion in usage by all members connected at each of the Transit Exchanges. At this current growth rate, it is estimated that the transit service across all five Transit Exchanges will have a sustained Internet traffic of 2.1 gigabits per second in two years.
Stay tuned for more interesting stats on BCNET's Internet transit service usage throughout the year!
