BCNET has increased the usage of lightpath technology between members and for specialized and experimental research projects. The University of British Columbia Medical Expansion Program, and grid-computing initiatives, such as Westgrid are utilizing lightpath technology.
BCNET has built lightpaths between all major BC research institutes including University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria, University of Northern British Columbia and British Columbia Institute of Technology.

What are lightpaths?
Lightpaths are direct point-to-point channels or dedicated wave signals. Network managers can connect optical network endpoints remotely, it as simple as administering software from the desktop. For example, BCNET connected three institutes for the UBC Medical Expansion project. The dedicated lightpaths enabled high-bandwidth activities such as videoconferencing for lectures and meetings.
What are the benefits of lightpaths?
- Dramatically increase data transport capacity at low costs
- Can customize traffic flows
- Enhanced performance
- Optimal management
